In this short presentation you will try to cultivate your ‘personal voice’ by coming up with a catch phrase that tells the audience about who you are and create an interesting image in the listener's mind.
Explore the lesser traveled path through the eyes of someone who grew up in these places. Hearing personal experiences from hometowns all over the world. Tourism may be changed forever due to a health pandemic. But that won't stop humans from seeking human connection in the world. Using immersive technology like augmented and virtual reality, we can explore the world in a different way. Perhaps it is not the same as traditional travel, but there are some forms of travel that might be better than before. This project seeks to connect humans with virtual travel.
This course will be a comparative introduction to American law and the U.S. legal system through the lens of popular culture/law related films. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the role of law in society, familiarize themselves with the U.S. legal system, and be better able to discuss current issues in law. While developing a deeper understanding of American laws and concepts, students will expand their legal vocabulary and strengthen their ability to read, write, understand, and professionally engage in a global legal environment.
To gain practical experience in international tourism contexts, this course aims to provide students with a set of tools and aid them in the creation, development, and implementation of projects related to the tourism industry. Students will gain to leverage technology and other resources to create guided tours, curate and mange tourist information, and conduct activities in a multi-national or multi-cultural environment. Introducing tools like virtual reality and automated language translation, students will gain skills and tools to better equip them to navigate tourism industry related activities.
This course will explore creative ways game design and motivation theories can be applied in the tourism industry. Games are being implemented in all aspects of human interaction and we are seeing it integrated into many business and marketing strategies. For example, airline companies challenge passengers to collect flyer miles for points and credit card companies give gold and platinum levels to climb to. This is called the ʻgamificationʼ of business and it is becoming more important to tourism as well. Historically, destinations have held games like stamp rallies, pub crawls, frequent visitor programs and more. But since the integration of mobile technology and GPS related games location based gaming like Pokemon Go is moving in a whole new direction and it has both opportunities and challenges for tourism promoters and developers. This class will introduce the concepts of gamification, the experience economy, game design, experience design, and design thinking. Students will be asked to come up with an experience and create a prototype using the latest tools like augmented and virtual reality.

In many different career fields, it has become more important to have basic skills in the creation of media. This course will cover the basics of creating video, audio, images, and other contents to be using in internet promotion for self-promotion, creative projects, and destination tourism. Students will gain basic knowledge of shooting video, taking photos, recording audio, and graphic design. Concepts of camera angles, camera movement, video editing, and other new media creation concepts will be introduced. Students will create short videos and take pictures to help tell stories about tourism destinations and other projects. This class will also explore creating new forms of media like augmented and virtual reality.
This class will introduce the concept of new media and its role in marketing and promotion. Topics related to the creation, use, distribution, and analysis of digital content will be covered. The role of social media, user generated content, public reviews, and other internet mediums will be discussed. The class will also discuss the concept of eWOM (electronic word-of-mouth) and the increasing importance of destination and other marketing by means of public opinion on the internet.
Introducing the MICE industry and the section of the tourism industry that drives the world’s destination gatherings for meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions, and other events. This course is a primer in the MICE industry and its role in destination tourism ecosystems both local to Kyoto and around the world. Students will gain a basic understanding of the importance of the MICE industry to the tourism industry and how various stakeholders both contribute to and are affected by MICE tourism. Students will directly apply this knowledge by proposing, planning, hosting, and assessing an event, seeking to simulate the various players and stakeholders in various roles in the process.
Being able to quickly find information and to confirm that information as valid and truthful has become a critical skill. In this course, you will understand how information flows on The Internet and how best to use tools to find and curate that information. You will learn the basics of the technology that allows computers to network and share information. You will learn advanced search tools and techniques and especially the art of 'Power Searching with Google'. You will examine how information is extracted from you as you use the internet and how adaptive and behavioral algorithms can change what information is presented to you.
Technology is becoming more integrated into our lives and our society in many ways. This course is a primer into the fundamentals on the use and role of technology in academics, politics, business, government, and society. Starting with the basics of computing technology and The Internet and ending with digital citizenship and the various issues facing younger generations of technology. Students will be introduced to tools that will help them navigate the digital landscape and assist them in their studies and lives, from keyboarding skills and Internet search to legal and ethical issues in technology use.
